In 1883, the first Orient Express departed from Paris, carrying dreams of traversing the European continent. At its destination in Istanbul, a luxurious hotel was built in 1892 specifically to welcome the distinguished guests of the Orient Express. It opened its doors in 1895, offering French champagne brought in by the Orient Express. This is the Pera Palace Hotel.
Located in the Tepebaşı district, known as ‘Little Europe‘, the hotel overlooks the Golden Horn. Its blend of neoclassical, art nouveau, and oriental styles was designed by FrenchTurkish architect Alexander Vallaury.
History has made the Pera Palace Hotel the oldest Europeanstyle hotel in Turkey. It was the first modern building in Istanbul constructed with iron and steel, the first public building with electricity, the first to provide hot running water to its guests, and home to Turkey‘s first elevator. In the 1910s, it became the first hotel in Turkey to serve curry dishes, with curry powder obtained from an Indian princess staying at the hotel. In 1926, the first fashion show in Istanbul was held at the Pera Palace Hotel.
The Pera Palace Hotel bore witness to the decline of the Ottoman Empire, the founding of the Turkish Republic and two world wars. It has attracted the most distinguished guests from around the world, hosting at least six presidents, eleven kings, and thirtynine renowned authors, as well as three famous spies. From the founder of modern Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, to King Edward VIII, Queen Elizabeth II, , Hemingway, Hitchcock, Greta Garbo, and many more, the hotel has left behind countless legends.
The Room 411 of Agatha Christie
Between 1926 and 1932, Agatha Christie was a frequent guest in room 411 of the Pera Palace Hotel. It is widely believed that she drew inspiration from the hotel‘s guests – proud Turkish nobles, melancholic Bulgarian princes, wealthy merchants, and spies from around the world – and created her famous novel ”Murder on the Orient Express” in room 411.
Today, room 411 is decorated in Agatha Christie‘s favorite colors of brown and burgundy, with a bookshelf that houses her works and a replica of the typewriter she used. Would you like to travel back in time and immerse yourself in the world of Agatha Christie
