Iceland, a country whose natural topography is recognized as the closest to the surface of the moon.
In this island nation located in the North Atlantic, there is no hustle and bustle of highrise buildings, only vast glaciers, sprawling tundra, and spectacular volcanic landscapes, forming breathtaking natural paintings.
Iceland is not only a paradise for explorers but also a dreamland for travelers who yearn to escape the noise and seek a pure land for the soul. On this land blessed by nature, there is a hotel called Panorama Glass Lodge, which has become the star of Iceland‘s tourism industry with its unique design and unparalleled natural experience.
Panorama Glass Lodge opened in 2017 and made a media sensation by creating the first ”aurora room” in Iceland where one can sleep entirely under a transparent glass ceiling, and it remains the most famous and popular glass hotel in Iceland to this day.
In 2011, Swiss girl Sabrina fell in love with this vast land during her first trip to Iceland. Soon after, she met Andreas, a young German man who also dreamed of Iceland, and they became husband and wife, settling in the small town of Selfoss in southern Iceland. Sabrina was engaged in the wedding styling business, and Andreas was hired as an engineer by Wow Air, an Icelandic airline company.
One morning in 2015, Sabrina woke up from a dream and immediately drew the scene she saw in her dream for Andreas. It was a transparent glass cabin, somewhat resembling a Nordic Viking pirate house, where guests could lie in a warm bed and enjoy the magical aurora, what a wonderful experience it would be
Sabrina‘s dream was fully supported by her husband, and the couple began to formulate a meticulous construction plan and business plan, chasing the aurora, chasing dreams.
The ice of Iceland is very cold, but everything follows the laws of nature.
To build the Panorama Glass Lodge, the first problem to be solved was the site selection, which must be far away from the city to avoid the impact of urban light sources in order to truly appreciate the aurora. The couple searched for more than two years until they saw an advertisement about land for sale in a highland wilderness in southern Iceland, which was rarely visited and had excellent scenery, and they bought it without hesitation.
Next came the construction. The couple cooperated with the Estonian ÖÖD house construction firm, a wellknown ”glass house builder” in the Nordic region with very rich experience. After onsite survey, the assembled glass cabin was first made in the factory in Estonia with all components, including steel frames, wood, and tempered glass, and then transported to the site in Iceland, which was completed in just one day.
Next, the hotel‘s operation must comply with Iceland‘s strict environmental protection laws. All water and electricity used must be 100 sustainable energy, all materials and food must be organic products, and all waste must be strictly classified and recycled. In this regard, Sabrina and Andreas are staunch defenders of environmental protection ideals, pursuing the purity of nature, and the ”strictness” of Iceland‘s environmental protection laws is just right for them.
In 2017, in the south of Iceland, at the foot of the Hekla volcano, about an hour and a half‘s drive from the capital Reykjavik, the ”Panorama Glass Lodge” opened its doors to welcome guests.
The four glass cabins are named after the four main gods in Norse mythology, each facing a direction, far apart, occupying a 5hectare lava highland, watching the uninhabited polar tundra, with a unique crescent decoration on the roof, originating from the Viking pirate horn mark.
The net area of the guest rooms is 23 square meters, with the bedroom in the front, an open dining area and a wellequipped kitchen in the middle, and a bathroom and bathroom in the back. Each guest room also has a hot tub on the outdoor terrace. The hotel has neither a reception desk nor service personnel, only a clear stream flowing in front, and the Hekla volcano mouth not far away, with clouds shrouded on the mountain top.
Guests lie in the big bed in the fully transparent ”transparent bedroom”, as if in the world, the view is unobstructed, the heart is infinite, and it is integrated with the sky and the ancient land of the Icelandic wilderness. If you check in between the end of August each year and the end of April of the following year, you can watch the aurora dance all over the sky in bed, blurring the boundary between reality and myth.
Iceland, the ”faraway” that you should visit at least once in your life; Panorama Glass Lodge, a spiritual post that you must not miss.
